Updates and other random Rush stuff April 30, 2007

Less than one day left until the US release of Snakes & Arrows! For those lucky fans across the pond it’s already available. What a great time to be a Rush fan! I thought I’d take care of some random Rush news that I’ve been meaning to post before the frenzy hits tomorrow.

On the website front, I’ve hit over 1000 registered users! Wow. I will also have another site feature for registered users up soon - probably tomorrow. I’ve just sent out another batch of RUSH IS A BAND bumper stickers. To get one of your own just donate at least $3 to the site! Thanks to everyone who’s donated. I appreciate it.

Snakes & Arrows review at AllMusic.com

AllMusic.com’s Thom Jurek recently reviewed Snakes & Arrows and really liked it; giving it a rating of 4 out of 5 and concluding the review with this statement:

… Snakes & Arrows is one of the tightest conceptual records the band has ever released. Musically, it is as strong as their very best material, without a lapse in texture, composition, production, musicianship, or sheer rock intensity. There are real heart and fire in this album. It was well worth waiting for.

Snakes & Arrows review in Toronto Sun April 29, 2007

Sun music critic Darryl Sterdan has reviewed Snakes & Arrows and gave it a rating of 3.5 out of 5. The entire review can be read at this link. Here’s an excerpt:

… Snakes and Arrows, for the most part, stays on the path established by 2002’s Vapor Trails and their nostalgic 2004 covers EP Feedback. The songs are simple and direct. The arrangements and performances are economical and restrained. The lyrics are dark and topical, preoccupied with questions of faith and war and politics. The overall vibe is slow and mellow. The sound is warm and contemporary, thanks to co-producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters).

New Alex Lifeson interview from Japanese TV

Reader pblaster found this recent Japanese TV interview with Alex Lifeson on YouTube. Unfortunately the questions are in Japanese so all you can understand are the answers (unless you speak Japanese of course). The interview goes on for about 6 and a half minutes and the rest is the music video for The Trees. You can watch it here.

Snakes & Arrows free poster giveaways at indie record stores

Similar to when Vapor Trails was released, independent record stores across the US will be giving away free 18″x24″ posters with a purchase of Snakes & Arrows. Several readers have reported seeing these advertised at their local indie store. For instance, Michael O let me know that Rhino Records in Claremont, CA is giving away the posters. And Spindrifter pointed me to this Blabbermouth article which details a special promotion in addition to the poster at Cleveland/Pittsburgh-area independent record store chain, The Exchange:

Snakes & Arrows reviews, round 1

The reviews for Snakes & Arrows are beginning to pour in and rather than post each individually, I thought I’d just lump them together in groups.

I’ll start off with the one bad review in the bunch. This one is from the University of California at San Diego’s The Guardian. The entire review can be read at this link. Here’s an excerpt:

… This new venture kicks off with two relatively decent tracks - “Far Cry” and “Armor and Swords” - which, on a greater album, could serve as decent filler. From there, Rush descend into hollow religious insights, pun-filled political sleepers and lyrics cheesed in anti-Bush rhetoric that even Neil Young wouldn’t touch (in “The Way the Wind Blows,” singer Geddy Lee wants to know why we let our “child get left behind”) - not to mention three, count them, three droning instrumentals. …

A trio of Rush online newspaper interviews

I came across 3 recent interviews in various online newspapers last night and this morning so I thought I’d lump them all into one post. The first is a Reuters/Billboard interview with Geddy and Alex released yesterday titled New songs on tap as Rush releases Arrows. Nothing really new in this interview except the last couple paragraphs were interesting:

… “There’s a lot of playing on this record,” Lifeson said. “To me it’s got our whole history in it, somehow. It’s got little bits of the way we wrote songs in the past, the kind of chords we might have used, but not in a nostalgic kind of way.”
