MTV Pup-Up video for Limelight May 31, 2006

Limelight MTV Pop-Up Video
Back in the late 90s MTV ran a show called Pop-Up Video where music videos were shown with “popped up” bubbles containing trivia nuggets. Well, surprisingly enough, one video they featured was Rush’s Limelight. I just uploaded it to YouTube and you can watch it here. The quality is not so good (it was converted from an old realvideo file) and the nuggets are barely readable, but it’s still fun to watch.

Rush included on new UK prog-rock compilation May 26, 2006

Prog Rock: 27 Classic Prog Rock Anthems on 2CDS
Featuring Yes, ELP, Genesis, Rush, Jethro Tull, & more…

The Rush hit, The Spirit of Radio is included on a new UK progressive rock compilation due out June 12th. Some other notable bands included on this 2-cd set are Genesis, Jethro Tull, Marillion, Yes, ELP and Blue Oyster Cult. Here’s what the press release says about Rush:

Prog Rock: 27 Classic Prog Rock Anthems on 2CDS
Featuring Yes, ELP, Genesis, Rush, Jethro Tull, & more…

Rush started out as a bunch of Led Zeppelin imitators, but once Neil Peart joined on drums (replacing John Rutsey) sword-and-sorcery tactics were the name of the game. (The game being orcs and goblins in a Games Workshop style.) The Spirit Of Radio, from 1980’s Permanent Waves album, dates from a time when the Canadian trio were trying to distance themselves from the fanciful flights of their early career. The song is a technical, intelligent, commercial take on prog - and no complaints here.

Rush makes the top 50 conservative rock songs list … twice

Conservative Top 50
I’d hardly call Rush conservative; libertarian might be a better label - at least in regards to their earlier years. Either way, 2 Rush songs made the National Review’s list of the top 50 conservative rock songs; The Trees came in at #11 and Red Barchetta was #22. Here’s what the article said about these 2 songs:

Conservative Top 50
11. “The Trees,” by Rush.
Before there was Rush Limbaugh, there was Rush, a Canadian band whose lyrics are often libertarian. What happens in a forest when equal rights become equal outcomes? “The trees are all kept equal / By hatchet, axe, and saw.”

Everyone would gather on the 24th of May May 24, 2006

It’s Victoria Day in Canada today. Well - sort of. The holiday was originally celebrated on May 24th but an amendment to the Statutes of Canada in 1952 moved the holiday to the Monday before 25 May. So this year it was celebrated on the 22nd. Either way, let’s celebrate with the lyrics to Lakeside Park:

Midway hawkers calling
Try your luck with me
Merry-go-round wheezing
The same old melody
A thousand ten cent wonders
Who could ask for more
A pocketful of silver
The key to heaven’s door
